FICLET: A Birthday Extravaganza - Gen - G
Jul. 20th, 2009 08:08 pmI just realized that I never posted this over here, so I'm rectifying that. This is just a quick-ish birthday ficlet/drabbleish thing that I wrote for
alissomora back in 2007 for her birthday. ♥
A Birthday Extravaganza
"Quick, Ron, help me finish up these balloons! Harry will be home in half an hour and we're not ready!"
Ron glanced up from the birthday cake he was currently sticking candles into. "I thought you wanted me to finish putting out the food?"
"I did, but I changed my mind. Have Ginny finish that up. You help me. There are more balloons than I thought there were, and the guests will be arriving soon."
"But Ginny's helping Fred and George hang the streamers."
"Well then Neville or Luna can finish with the food!"
Ron looked at Hermione for a moment, shrugged his shoulders and shouted. "Neville! Hermione wants you to finish putting out the food!"
Hermione blinked. "Honestly, Ron, I'd be shocked if Harry himself didn't hear that all the way at the Ministry."
Ron shrugged again, just as a loud crash issued from the kitchen.
"What now?" Hermione asked in exasperation.
Luna stuck her head into the room. "No worries," she said calmly. "Neville dropped the pan of cookies. The cookies are all right, though. Bill managed to levitate them before they hit the ground. They're currently flying slowly around the kitchen. One's stuck up on the ceiling fan."
Hermione put her head in her hands.
Ron smothered his laughter before replying. "Go ahead and put the cookies on a plate, Luna, and bring them out to the table. Leave the one on the ceiling fan, though. Lord only knows the last time Harry dusted up there."
Luna gave a serene smile. "Sure, Ronald."
Ron looked over to Hermione, who was once again inflating balloons with a flick of her wand, a rather disgruntled look on her face, and went over to help.
Within minutes the guests had all arrived and Harry's flat was becoming crowded.
"Ron, are Fred and George through with the streamers? It's nearly five o'clock!"
As Ron opened his mouth to reply a series of loud popping noises sounded from the hall.
"Fred, stop! I told you not to use those!"
"Aww, Ginny, relax! George and I worked out all the kinks! The ball will expand and pop open, spreading the streamers around the room!"
George chimed in. "It's a huge timesaver, you'll see!"
"All I see is that ball getting bigger and bigger! It's going to fill up the entire hall!"
"Come on, Ginny, you're exaggerat--"
Suddenly there was a pop, a series of bangs, and a huge BOOM that rattled the windows, followed by a gust of wind that knocked Ron and Hermione off their feet as they entered the hall.
Streamers of every color flew across the room and rained down from the ceiling, landing on everything in sight: Harry's coatrack, the pictures and certificates on the wall, the guests who'd ventured into the hall to see what all the commotion was about ...
and Harry himself, who had apparently apparated right into the middle of the hall right before the ball had exploded. He regarded them all with a very bewildered expression.
Fred pulled himself to his feet. "George, I think we'd better take a look at that spell again. I don't think we got all the kinks out after all."
George pulled Harry's coat off of him, which had been blown off the coatrack. "I think you're right, Fred." He spotted Harry and gave him a big grin, cuffing Fred on the shoulder. "Oy, hello Harry!"
Fred looked up, a blue streamer hanging from one of his ears.
"Happy Birthday, Harry!"
Hermione sighed, picked up an umbrella from the nearby umbrella stand, and thwacked Fred soundly over the head.
